THE HISTORY CHANNEL: THE CURSE OF OAK ISLAND To entice information junkies and solution-seekers to tune in for the second season of The History Channel’s real-life adventure show, The Curse of Oak Island, CNMG brought this real-life treasure hunt to life digitally, engaging the target audience and increasing awareness and viewership. CNMG partnered with WIRED to create an immersive parallax Web experience inviting users to virtually explore the infamous Oak Island treasure pit. On the custom website, innovative use of seamless scrolling offered users a means to move between background and foreground imagery, providing the illusion of depth, accompanied by a haunting soundtrack. Users were driven to the landing page by a series of custom units on WIRED.com. When they arrived on the site, they found themselves transported to Nova Scotia’s Oak Island. Immersive animation allowed users to explore the excavation site as they scrolled down, while visual and audio cues signaled them to click/tap and interact, breaking through layers of the dig via a dramatic animation, revealing the items found by explorers at each depth level of the pit (every 10 feet). A flood in a booby-trapped chamber provided a surprising plot twist and a suspenseful end to the virtual tour, leaving users curious and eager for more. Videos from the show were integrated throughout the experience, offering a glimpse into the show’s storytelling style and characters, driving tune-in. Due to the ease of navigation through particularly entertaining content, the site kept many thousands of users engaged twice as long as editorial content of the WIRED site.
