Thales came to us with a challenge. From research, they had discovered that, many students weren’t considering apprenticeships and if they were, they weren’t looking at engineering – primarily because they felt they didn’t have the necessary skills.

Our job was to educate our audience about the benefits of apprenticeships, AND, make them realise that the skills that Thales were looking for weren’t confined to those mastered in the classroom – broadening out to include problem-solving, appreciation of technology and quick thinking. In addition, we had to appeal equally to males and females.

The solution

We wanted to create a splash, appeal to a broader audience than STEM students, and educate that audience about the softer skills that Thales look for in their apprentices. We decided to create an interactive video game that our audience would want to play.

Our premise for the game was this: Your friend, a Thales Apprentice, was celebrating her first year by offering to take you on holiday. You just needed to get to the airport on time.

Combining first-person POV action with state-of-the-art interactivity, our video immersed you in a game that tested mental agility, observation, listening skills and knowledge of technology. By cross-referencing these with Thales requirements, we could open up the conversation to include our key message around apprentices and get our audience to consider future career options.

Results:

The game has been a huge success. To date, over 1,300 people have played, and, from Facebook promotion tracking, we can see that 59% are female. More importantly, all the apprenticeship scheme places are currently filled.
